Abstract

This week's photo assignment was to take "abstract" photos. I took my photos of natural objects we have at home. Zoomed in. Adjusted the sharpness and texture. Added a black and white filter.

When I was done, I looked up the definition of abstract. There are quite few, as you can imagine, depending on context. In short, the abstract is used to describe things that are intangible, something that is theoretical, or (in art) depicting a subject in a non-literal way or wheras an object is not represented realistically.

It got me thinking... that a lot of people are living in the abstract right now. The way they show up online. The manner in which they navigate their realities. Based on theoretical worlds- and not the one their currently inhabitating. We have all been guilty of this. Seeing the world they way we wish (or fear) it to be. Instead of recognizing and accepting it as it is. We choose to believe that the curated photos and aesthetically pleasing online profiles represent truth. When really they only exacerbate the lie that life is picture perfect or exists only in beige and ivory settings.

Life is so much more than that. There is so much texture and nuance and cracks to explore. Maybe that is why I keep this blog. To explore and give voice to the imperfections, the failures, the missteps, and the HUMANITY of it all.
